techniques
Underpainting: An initial layer of paint applied on the surface that serves as a base for other layers that will be applied on top of it. Underpaintings are usually monochromatic and are used to define the color values that will be used on top of it. They are a very light version of the final painting. The three most common ways to create an under-painting are Verdaccio (using green), Grisaille (using gray), and Bistre (using brown).
Blending: It works by changing the colors slowly one into another. By blending the diverse colors one gets a softer and cleaner look. The colors are often from the same scale.
Double Colors: It works by double loading a brush by dipping the opposite sides of the brush hair in different colors. It is used to create a better illusion of higlights or shadows.
Tints and Shades: A tint is the color that comes from adding white to a certain color. A shade is the color created by adding black to a given color. Tints are used to create highlights to their original color while shades are used to create shadow.
Complementary Colors: Complementary colors are colors which are opposite on the color wheel. They help create the shades and mix very well.
Color Schemes
A color scheme is the choice of color one makes to do an artwork. I will use a monochromatic color scheme because I want to give the illusion of night time. The primary color in which I am basing my color scheme is blue. I think to choose a color scheme one has to have a clear idea of what you want as a final product.
